On international womens’ day we celebrate women – as on any other day of the year!🌟💪✨

Gender inequality is a pervasive issue worldwide, especially in agriculture.
WINCC celebrates those who bring this to our attention and inspire to achieve improvements. This could for example be female researchers who focus on discovering more about the role women play in the cocoa value chain and how their involvement and decision making can cocoa and chocolate to become a more equitable workfield.

Research* shows that female farmers are highly involved in cocoa production, but their roles and decision-making power differ between male and female managed farms. In addition, women are found to benefit financially significantly less than men, with varying degrees of discrimination.

The research shows us that there is still a need for a focus on gender equality within the cocoa sector. Initiatives such as the Women for Change project** of CARE therefore are vital, inspiring and apply this vision. The project focuses more specifically on the role women play in the farming of cocoa. Over the course of the project, women’s influence on decision making within the household had doubled, increased women’s confidence and it has strengthened child protection.
Everyday we should celebrate those who shine a light on prevailing problems in cocoa and chocolate, and today we shine a little extra light!
